So I jumped on the bike and for the first ride outdoors this year I decided to go 20 miles up the biggest climb near my house.

I lived and actually felt pretty good. When I ride alone I like to have my iPod shuffle in my ears just loud enough to hear and still hear the traffic. I also have a rear view mirror I look into obsessively. As I was suffering up the hill I started thinking about the best climbing songs. Here they are:

The Top 5 Climbing Songs (in my cycling play list)
5. Don't Stop, Fleetwood Mac
4. Get Over It, The Eagles
3. Keep Pushin On, REO Speedwagon
2. Hitch a Ride, Boston

And the number 1 climbing song of all time....

1. House of Pain, Van Halen

Looking at these songs you can tell how old I am. Not much new in the list.

I would love to hear your thoughts, what am I missing?

Missed it by that much.

Yesterday of course was 63 degrees with very little wind and I had to be indoors all day.

Today was supposed to be 60's again so was looking forward to the first day outside on the bike. I can do wet and I can do cold but I can't do wet and cold. At 7:00 in the morning it's wet and cold.

However the storm system left the area about 7:40 and the ride started at 8:00. Perfect.

We arrived at the start gate about 8:03 and most of the riders were already on the road. The roads were a little wet and it was a little chilly at 61 degrees with a rooster tail of water going up my back but things quickly dried out.

12 years ago three of us had the idea to start a bicycle tour around the Calamus lake and river as a start to the bicycling season to get us in the mood to train for a century. My friend Tom helped a lot with the logistics and the first ride netted about 40 riders. This year they had 126. Not bad for this little town. It's a great ride with a great venue and the community really gets behind it.

For $20.00 you get all you can eat spaghetti from Barbs cafe Friday night, all you can eat pizza from the Pizza Palace after the ride, a t-shirt, 3 well stocked SAGs at 12 miles each, 3 roving SAGs and mechanical support. The best value in America as far as I can tell.

We had a bit of a wind for the second leg but it turned into a cross tail wind on the final 18-20 miles. I got to ride with a good friend and catch up with lots of old friends. The route this year was a bit different because they have had lots of rain and two bridges were washed out on the original course but the alternate was fun and not terribly difficult. We ended up with 52 miles and a great time.

You should come and join us next year.

A lot has happened

Since my last post, It's been a long time.

I've been trying to simplify my life and deciding what to do with 3 blogs. I still haven't decided what to do with the blogs but I'm in the mood to post here today since I did a 46 mile ride and feel really good.

Since my last post a really cool thing happened. A friend gave me a set of Rolph Vector Comp wheels with a brand new cassette, Michelin Axial Pro tires, and a set of Look Pedals.

I'm blown away at how well they roll. My friend has had a set for years and has always told me I should get a set but there a bit expensive. In fact the wheels, tires, cassette, and pedals are worth more than I paid for the whole bike 10 years ago.

Also since my last post I've put up almost 500 miles which is more than I had the previous two years combined.

The Calamus 1/2 Century in Burwell NE is this weekend and I haven't been able to get out a lot so I've been trying to put up long rides when I can. So I've got a couple 36 mile rides and a couple 28 mile rides and have been focusing on recovery this year. It seams to be working.

The saddle is seriously stiff and I'm still getting used to it but after a 3 hour ride today I feel ok. I'll let you know how the Burwell ride goes. You should come and join us. So I wasn't very excited to get up at all let alone get up and ride.

I know it sounds like I'm getting ready to go outside. I'm not. I'm riding indoors which I hate.

I got downstairs and fired up Slacker Radio. I created a station called cycling which is classic rock, the good stuff. They started off a little slow with some obscure stuff I haven't had a chance to clean up. It was mostly ok and then they hit a sweet spot.

Van Halen, Journey, Boston, Styx, Cheap Trick, and finally at about 36 minutes I was ready to quit when Queen came up with "I Want To Ride My Bicycle" had to finish out. Was a good thing because Meatloaf was up next and I had to get off the bike to ban him.

Good ride, 40 minutes and my average heart rate is coming down. That's a very good thing. I hope we have good weather in Nebraska I really want to get outside with the Ninja.

Feeling better

Good ride today, went 45 minutes just to push through something.

At 30 minutes I put it in the big gear and spun it up to 100 cadence for 60 seconds and then timed my recovery.

I hit 180 at the end, (I think my max hrt is 185) at 1 minute I was at 172, at two minutes 168, at 3 minutes 152, at 5 minutes recovered to 144. It doesn't have to be "new" just new to me. Last week I got an 18.5 inch LCD monitor for my powerbook. The 12 inch screen was seriously cramping my style and the big one keeps me at my desk working.

Yesterday I went to my favorite store. Performance Bicycle on Academy and Austin Bluffs in Colorado Springs. Looking for a stem. Long story, won't go into it. Bottom line I can't get one so the other thing I wanted was a new saddle. The one I'm riding is the one that came on the bike it was a little to rounded and gave me issues. It's a family blog I won't go into that either.

This was $79.00 retail on clearance for $39.00. As I spoke to the tech guy he told me they had one in the back they had taken off a new bike he would let me have for $30.00.

As much as I love stuff I love getting it on the cheap.

So today I'm back on the bike after a much too long layoff. Went only 40 minutes becuase this saddle is hard. Which I will get used to but I had enough at 40 minutes. It also is flatter on top and has space underneath so I didn't have the issue I spoke about earlier.

Numbers today not very impressive but the sun has been shining and as soon as I can I will head outdoors. Also I'm going on a ministry trip the Friday before Easter through Nebraska so I'm hoping the weather will be good enough for me to ride with my best riding partner.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Blessings,

Cycling Stinks

The Fat Cyclist is my favorite cycling blog. According to my calendar I should be at 90 minutes but I don't know if I can do 90 minutes on the trainer.

I set up the laptop and started streaming "The Insider" from netflix, great movie, which kept me occupied for the first 40 minutes then I started watching the clock. 90 minutes on the trainer is an eternity especially for someone who loves riding indoors as much as I do.

Here are the numbers:
Time 1:00:00
Max 16.2
Avg 13.9
Dist 13.96
Avg HRT 120
Calories 795
Cadence 80
Weight 161 lbs
Body fat 18.1% I think my scale is messed up. Or does it?

Observations:
Breathe Right strips are amazing. Here's the question:

I'm looking to buy a bike resistance trainer for indoor exercise on my own wheels. Any suggestions on brands or types ?? I'm not hard core, just need something that would get me moving when it's not safe to be outside on the ice/snow. Thanks..
There are four main types of indoor trainers. Wind, magnetic, and fluid, are all the same basic design with different types of resistance mechanisms. The last type are rollers.

The most common and least expensive are the small tripod shaped trainers with different kinds of resistance.

My first trainer was a Cyclops wind trainer.

Resistance is provided by the fan. The faster you spin the more resistance you get. It's a fairly inexpensive and durable trainer. You can find them almost anywhere from $140.00 to $150.00.

The downside to these is they are very noisy. I gave mine away a few years ago

Here is my current set up:

It's a Forza magnetic trainer. Resistance is provided by a magnetic flywheel and is much quieter than the fan. This one costs around $100.00 and has worked very well for me. I got it at the Bike Shed in Kearney from my good friend Paul. Although I haven't really put many miles on it. Have I mentioned how much I hate riding indoors?

The last of these are Fluid trainers. They work on the same principle as the magnetic except it adds fluid chambers to the spinning flywheel. These are the most expensive, from $200.00 - $500.00, and quietest of this type.

The final type are rollers:

The best thing about rollers is you maintain your balance as you ride. You can always tell the riders in the spring who have been riding the type of trainer I have all winter. Their all over the road. Rollers are most like riding outside.

They're priced from about $175.00 up. The biggest downside to these is size. Fatty rode rode a century on e-motion rollers last year. You can read about it here.

The main brands would be Cyclops, Blackburn, Minoura, Kinetic, those are off the top of my head.

There are several online bike shops. My favorite is Performance Bike. There is also Colorado Cyclist, and Nashbar. There are others these are just the ones I have used.

Now my recommendation,

For me the best bang for the buck is the small tripod setup with magnetic resistance. they are quiet enough and smooth enough and you can pick them up pretty cheap.

Hope that helps. Please ask questions in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them.

Fasting and Riding

Over the past several years I have felt like God was drawing me in closer and part of that was a lifestyle of fasting.

I have never fasted well. Recently I was in Family Christian bookstore and picked up Jentzen Franklins book "Fasting". It has really stirred me up. Recently I did a 3 day fast and it was amazing, then last week I fasted a day and I was a mess, then on Sunday I tried a half day fast and was just angry and frustrated. Today was a great day. I was fasting today for direction and for my wife. Because I love her :-)

I want to do a 21 day fast but I also want to ride the Copper Triangle this year and I don't know if those two goals are compatible. I know a pastor who did a 40 day water fast and worked out the whole time. So I know it can be done however; I am the one Jesus referred to when He said oh you of little faith.

Tonight I rode 45 minutes and did a 60 second spin in the big gear with 100 cadence. My heart rate went to 177 and took me 2:44 to recover below 150. I feel pretty good. I set out to just do a one day fast and God was gracious and answered me today. But I'm going to see how I feel later tonight and decide if I will go forward or not.

I don't intend for this space to be for anything other than cycling but I am a follower of Jesus and I cannot separate the two.

Blessings,

Busy Week

Have had a lot of meetings this week and not able to get on the bike. Spinning 90 cadence on the interval setting made me feel a little wimpy which I guess is ok because it pushed me.

I know I'm building base but it kept me interested. Numbers about the same and my body fat is hovering right around 18% which for a 44 year old male I guess that's not terrible.

You need to go and register with Bike Journal It's free and allows you to keep track of your mileage. The only thing I did differently was to spin up a big gear for 60 seconds to see how long it takes me to recover. My heart rate went to 169, about 21 mph, and took me about 3 minutes to recover to 130. Not good, but at least I have a bench mark for later.

I know nobody is reading this blog but I'm going to ask a question anyway.

Do you wear gloves on the trainer?

I've already confessed the first two days I didn't wear cycle shorts and my sit bones paid the price. Today I wore an old pair. Sit bones happy. I also haven't been wearing gloves but today I put them on and both of my boys said, "do you really need gloves on the trainier?". As if to say what are you doing trying to be cool?

No I'm not trying to be cool. That ship has sailed, it's more comfortable for the same reason cycle shorts are, they absorb the sweat, and help me to not slide around on the bars.

So there's my confession. Do you wear them or not?

Observations

The numbers today are almost identical to yesterday so I won't bother you with them again. Instead a few observations.
1. My legs are exceedingly hairy.

As you look at the picture you may be thinking, "those legs are not so hairy", and in most cases you would be right however; if your a cyclist these legs are exceedingly hairy.

I have this wierd thing about shaving my legs though. But it's not what your thinking. The rite to shaved legs must be earned. It's a fairly vague definition of earning for me. As soon as I have enough miles and a certain level of fitness I'll shave. I'll let you know when that happens. I know you can't wait.

2. My cadence is very lumpy,

Last year I rode only 260 miles. Probably the lowest annual total since I began riding almost 10 years ago not including the two years I was in Australia. I have a long way to go.

3. My sit bones are aching,

As you can see from the picture I am not wearing biking shorts, partly because of the hairy legs. Don't know if it would have mattered since I am so out of shape but It seams odd that after only 1 hour and 12 miles on the trainer they would hurt this much.

4. Finally I think I'm in better shape than I feared.

Other than the sit bones thing I feel really good. I know it's two very wimpy days but I really feel good.

Thanks for checking in. If you look at the column on the right you'll see my training calendar if your interested. I still have 3 weeks in April I'm not sure what to do with. But I'll figure it out before I get there. Or not. I'm really not worried about it.

Finally Got Going

Finally got downstairs and set everything up. One was training for and riding the Copper Triangle in August.

I found my old Century training plan and updated it. It's a 3 month training plan to be fit enough to finish a century well. Which gives me too much time before I start so it's been difficult getting out of bed when my wife gets up to workout at 5:30. I really hate mornings.

Two days ago I brought my bicycle in from the garage to change the back tire so I can put it on the trainer. Still haven't done that.

So I am heading to the basement to set up the bike and ride the stationary for 30 minutes keeping my heart rate below 130. I need a good aerobic base before I get started in earnest. I'm hoping 45 days will give me a pretty good base.

I'll keep you posted.

Real Heroes

It’s one thing to see stories like this on TV but when it’s someone you know it really brings it home.

Aaron and Tanya have been in this process for a long time and when they found out they could bring their boys home they could have just focused on themselves and that would have been fine but that’s not what they did.

With the help of Messenger International where Aaron is the CFO they chartered a 737 and brought home 80 children. I don't know that I'm any worse for the wear than when I did.

This year I just needed something to shoot for so in addition to finishing my second book by July 1st and writing 30 songs, going for quantity not quality, I have decided to train for and complete the Copper Triangle.

Since returning from Bible College in Sydney Australia I've struggled to get back on the bike consistently. It's about 10 years old with almost 10,000 miles on it but still in great shape.

Last year I sold my mountain bike. I just don't like to bleed and I don't heal as fast as I used to. Two years ago I was given a Felt road bike which was very nice but a guy in Canon City needed it worse than I did so I gave it to him. He put almost 3000 miles on it last year so it was a good thing :-)

I will be posting rides and how the year goes here so I look forward to your thoughts.

Spinfast

Winter Riding

I am sick of politics, though I am hopeful, I am discouraged today at the ignorance, I mean that not in the pejorative sense, of the American public. So I’m going to change the subject.

I don’t really know if anyone reads this blog and if anyone does I really don’t know why. Today I am going to do an experiment. I’m going to ask a question,

Here it is:
It’s about 58 and sunny today and since my work hours have changed to 6:00 am to 3:00 pm I get home around 3:45 with plenty of time to ride outside. I hate riding indoors and can’t seem to make myself. I would love to get a computrainer but I don’t have $1,000 and I’m not convinced if I bought one I would use it. Did I mention I hate riding indoors? I did? Sorry.

I don’t really have the gear for winter riding. I have one very light pair of full finger gloves, one pair of very cheap tights with no chamois, one long sleeved jersey, a very light jacket, good headcover, a pair of shoes full of holes, ventilation not worn out.

Do you ride in the cold?
Where do I start accumulating gear?
Should I buy tights or leg warmers?
Where should I spend my money? I’m thinking shoes but not sure.
So there it is. let me know what you think. even if your not a cyclist I would love to hear your thoughts.

This Happened To Me Last Year

Just when I was starting to feel good on the bike. I’m at 1000 miles for the year. Not much by some standards quite a bit by others. For me I’m halfway to my goal for the year.

Just like last year about this time the weather is perfect in the morning until about mid afternoon and then the clouds roll in. Which by itself is not so bad. The lightning however is completely different set of circumstances. We have had 3 people that I know of struck by lightning this year. I don’t want to be the 4th.

On top of everything else I have been so busy I haven’t been able to ride as much. So my options are too get up in the morning. Not a great option but an option none the less. Or come in a little earlier and take a long lunch. I have been doing that a couple times a week but I rely on at least one or two evenings to get my miles in.

Oh well if it’s that important, and I believe it is for my sanity, then I will have to make time.
In the meantime. My quiet times have been sweet. Though still not as regular and consistent as I would like when I am able to make time they are sweet. I so love the presence of God and His still small voice. The Word of God is amazing and always timely, always weighty. I am so blessed.

I hope you are able to keep your priorities straight and make time for the one thing that is selfish and feeds you.
Blessings,

Happy Fathers Day

Another beautiful day in Colorado Springs, but first happy fathers day to all you dad’s.
Especially to my dad. He taught me a lot about commitment, doing what you say your going to do. My dad always does more than is expected. He’s a great craftsman and a very hard worker. I will call him later this evening and tell him how much I appreciate him.

On to the ride. My fathers day gift from my family was 3 hours on my bike it was great.

I loaded up two 16oz water bottles and my camel back with two cliff bars and headed out with the goal of 50 miles without going into the red zone. The wind was perfect and the temp was good. Warm but not too hot. I only went into the red zone 3 times. the first time a black ant flew into the vents in my helmet on the first big climb after Palmer Lake. I didn’t want to stop on the climb so I hammered to the top, took off my helmet and shook him loose. He only bit me a half dozen times so I’m good.

The second time was the top of Larkspur pass, it’s a steep one, and the final climb after Larkspur. It’s long and I was tired so I spun it up to the top. The rest of the ride was good. I had good legs all the way home.

Here are the numbers:
3:15:39, 50.09 miles, 15.3mph avg, 42.4max, burned 3485 calories, bring on the shortcake, and avg hrt of 153, weighing in at 162 & something, about 20% body fat, who can tell with my goofy scale.

Looking forward to a good week. I’ll check in Monday if I ride. It’s my 18th anniversary and I’m trying to get my wife to go out with me.
